Abstract

This literature review with bibliometric analysis examines the evolution and scientific trends in environmental pollution caused by plastic tapes and tubes in agricultural micro-irrigation systems between 2015 and 2025. The Scopus® database and VOSviewer and Bibliometrix tools were used. The results show a steady increase in scientific production, primarily concentrated in Italy and China, with growing international collaboration. Both the Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro and Yunnan Agricultural University stand out as the most prominent institutions, and the most prolific authors are Evelia Schettini and Giuliano Vox. Global interest in the effects of plastic contamination in agricultural soils and in fertigation is reflected in predominant keywords such as microplastics, plastic waste, drip irrigation, and soil pollution. The analyzed research confirms that the decomposition and fragmentation of agricultural plastics affect both soil structure and the transport of contaminants. In conclusion, scientific findings indicate the need to implement sustainable technologies and circular management strategies to reduce plastic pollution in modern agriculture, supported by effective public policies that prioritize soil health, environmental protection, and public consumer safety.
